NAEYC Annual Conference 2012 – DAP in the 21st Century

“We’ve got technology in our program, but now what?” Making decisions about digital apps and software that support active learning
Presenters: Karen Nemeth & Fran Simon
Date & Time: November 8, 2012 – 8 am
Location: Georgia World Congress Center, B211/B212

Wow, those sparkling new iPads are cool, but …

    • What are you going to do with them?
    • How will iPads, Smart Tables, Interactive Whiteboards, digital cameras, and other juicy tech tools fit into your interest centers, hands-on activities, and daily planning?
    • How can you use them to help children progress?
    • Will they distract the children and teachers, or enhance learning?

Join this session to learn more about how to make wise decisions about integrating technology into your program. Designed for early childhood administrators and lead teachers, this session will help participants learn to make decisions about how to select and use digital tools in developmentally appropriate classrooms using practical implications of the new NAEYC technology position statement.

Is your program webinar-ready? A guide to producing and presenting webinars for professional development, marketing, enrollment, family engagement, and advocacy
Presenter: Fran Simon
Date & Time: November 9, 2012, 8 AM
Location: Georgia World Congress Center, B308

You probably know it’s easy to attend webinars, but have you considered using them to meet some of your most pressing management and program challenges? You can make meetings and pitches, accessible to busy parents, supporters, donors, policymakers, or potential members who might otherwise not be able to connect with you.

Whether you are a consultant, professional speaker, program administrator, or other professional development provider, this session will help you determine if webinars make sense for your organization, and if so, some of the skills you will need to be successful when you produce them. This session will provide an overview of the good, bad, and ugly sides of webinar hosting and production, and how to select a webinar provider. You will learn important skills, “insider” tips that will help you present engaging and successful webinars. Join a fellow early childhood educator and experienced webinar producer to learn how webinars and online meetings can help your program tackle some of its most daunting challenges.

What bilingual staff and volunteers need to know
Presenter: Karen Nemeth and Faith Polk
Date & Time: November -November 9, 2012 3:00 PM
Location: Georgia World Congress Center, B208

Many programs recruit bilingual staff and volunteers to meet different language needs.

    • What should bilingual staff/volunteers do in early childhood classrooms?
    • What orientation do they need?
    • What professional development is available?
    • How should they use their first/second languages with children?

We’ll help programs work together to learn about effective bilingual strategies and develop guides they can bring back. We’ll outline why bilingual staff and volunteers need support, preparation or guidance. We’ll present research and resources to back this up. Then we’ll present ideas for creating an orientation program to inform bilingual staff/volunteers about the basics of first/second language development and prepare them to work effectively in one or both of their languages according to the needs of each program. Strategies will be presented with large group discussion. A comprehensive list of resources will be provided so that bilingual staff/volunteers can find the support and ideas they need, and so that supervisors, directors, master teachers, and professional development providers can learn more about appropriate roles for bilingual staff and volunteers in early childhood programs.
